Morrowind Runs in Your Browser Thanks to OpenMW WebAssembly Port
Virtastic's browser-based port lets players launch the 2002 RPG directly in Chrome, Edge, or Brave without uploading game files to a server.
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind now runs natively in web browsers, eliminating installation requirements entirely. Virtastic compiled the open-source OpenMW engine to WebAssembly and hosts the port at morrowind.virtastic.app.
The browser version supports shadows, water effects, save systems, and gamepad input. "It's the actual engine, not a stream and not an emulator, so shadows, water, saves and gamepads all work," Reddit user Dumpster_Buddy wrote when sharing the project.
Players can access a free example world immediately, or point the site to their own local Morrowind installation using the browser's File System Access API. Game files remain on the user's machine and are not uploaded to any remote server.
The port works best on desktop Chromium-based browsers: Chrome, Edge, and Brave. Firefox and Safari are not officially supported.
Open Source Engine Enables Browser Port
OpenMW, the open-source reimplementation of Morrowind's engine, made the browser port possible. The project reflects a broader trend in the game's dedicated modding community, which has recently ported Morrowind to unconventional hardware including a dual-screen setup for the AYN Thor handheld.
This mirrors similar "run it on anything" efforts seen with Doom, where fan communities repeatedly demonstrate that classic games can run on unexpected platforms when source code or open-source engines become available.
Lowering Barriers to Entry
The browser port removes traditional friction for trying Morrowind. Users with existing game files can launch the 2002 RPG without installing additional software or configuring compatibility layers. The example world lets curious players sample the experience before committing to locating game files.
Eurogamer reported that Virtastic may consider adding online multiplayer features in the future, though the company has not publicly confirmed these plans.
The project demonstrates how open-source game engines can bypass conventional distribution and installation requirements, enabling massive RPGs to run directly in web browsers with full feature support.
