Neon Giant Unveils 'No Law', a Cyberpunk Immersive Sim Focused on Player Agency

The developer of The Ascent aims to refine the immersive sim genre by decoupling progression from minor tasks in a dense European setting.

Neon Giant, the Swedish studio behind The Ascent, has revealed its latest project, 'No Law,' a first-person cyberpunk immersive sim. Showcased recently at Gamescom, the title seeks to modernize the immersive sim formula by prioritizing systemic reactivity over traditional experience-point grinding.

Published by KRAFTON, the game is set in Port Desire, a city characterized by a "Mediterranean flair" that blends futuristic technology with aged European architecture. Players step into the role of Grey Harkner, a retired military veteran who is forced back into a life of violence after attempting to find peace. The game is slated for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Solving the Progression Puzzle

The immersive sim genre, defined by titles such as Deus Ex, has historically struggled with "XP gaming." This occurs when players are incentivized to perform every minor task—such as picking every lock in a level—simply to maximize their character's numerical progression, regardless of their chosen playstyle.

No Law intends to solve this by decoupling progression from these minor actions. Instead, the game rewards the completion of larger objectives. This shift ensures that players who choose a direct, aggressive approach are not penalized in growth compared to those who meticulously clear every room via stealth, restoring true agency over numerical optimization.

A Reactive, Intimate World

Unlike the sprawling mega-cities common in the cyberpunk genre, No Law focuses on a denser, more intimate environment. Co-founder and Creative Director Tor Frick noted that the game is "a lot more intimate" than titles like Cyberpunk 2077, both in its world-building and its mechanical approach.

This intimacy is supported by a systemic world where player actions have tangible consequences. The game features a reactive environment where killing certain NPCs can lead to permanent changes, such as a shop closing the following day. Furthermore, dialogue adapts dynamically based on whether the player has been stealthy or aggressive in their approach to objectives.

The Path Forward

By moving away from the trope of the endless metropolis and addressing fundamental flaws in progression, Neon Giant is attempting to carve out a specific niche in the cyberpunk landscape. While the core mechanics and setting have been detailed, a formal release date has not been officially confirmed by the developer or publisher. Observers will be watching to see if this systemic approach to progression can successfully eliminate the redundant "checklist" gameplay that has plagued the immersive sim genre for decades.
