Nvidia Debuts DLSS 5 Generative AI Rendering Amid Performance Concerns

Nvidia is launching DLSS 5, a controversial leap in upscaling technology that utilizes generative AI to alter game visuals. The feature debuts with the release of NBA 2K27, marking a fundamental shift in how the company approaches image reconstruction.
At the center of the update is "3D-Guided Neural Rendering." According to Nvidia, this technology uses a game engine's geometry, textures, and lighting buffers as a foundation to generate lifelike lighting and material details. Nvidia claims the system adds rich details that real-time performance constraints previously forced developers to remove, signaling what the company calls the beginning of a "transformative era."
However, the rollout is restricted to high-end hardware. DLSS 5 is exclusively available for GeForce 50-series graphics cards, compatible laptops, and GeForce Now users. Drivers for the technology are scheduled for release Thursday night at 9 p.m. PDT and Friday morning at 5 a.m. BST.
A Pivot Toward Generative Visuals
Unlike previous iterations of DLSS, which focused primarily on resolution reconstruction and frame generation to boost performance, DLSS 5 moves into "neural rendering." This approach allows the AI to actively modify the visual fidelity of the scene, a move that has already drawn criticism.
Early reveals of the technology featured Grace Ashcroft in Resident Evil Requiem, where the AI's output was criticized for "yassifying" the character. Further concerns emerged from leaked mods in titles such as Control and Cyberpunk 2077. In one instance involving The Witcher 3, the generative AI reportedly made the protagonist, Geralt, appear significantly older than intended by the developers.
Performance and Artistic Concerns
While Nvidia promotes the visual gains, early data suggests a steep cost in performance. According to Eurogamer, an RTX 5060 runs NBA 2K27 at 1080p Ultra at 43 FPS, while the top-tier RTX 5090 only just exceeds 60 FPS when running at 4K on Ultra settings. These figures have fueled a broader narrative that the new AI enhancements may tank frame rates for the average user.
This shift represents a risky pivot for Nvidia. By moving from performance-enhancing AI to generative AI that can override a developer's artistic intent, the company is facing questions about the ethics of AI-driven "beautification" and whether the visual trade-offs justify the hardware strain.
