Paradox Unveils LEGO Skylines City-Builder at Gamescom

The LEGO-themed spin-off of Cities: Skylines blends systemic urban management with whimsical creative freedom.

Paradox Interactive has officially announced LEGO Skylines, a new city-building title developed by Iceflake Studios. The game merges the systemic depth of the Cities: Skylines franchise with the imaginative nature of LEGO bricks.

Unveiled during Gamescom Opening Night Live, the title is designed to let players construct everything from efficient, functional metropolises to entirely absurd urban environments. According to Paradox, the gameplay loop blends traditional city management—such as managing electricity, water, and food supply chains—with the ability to create outlandish designs. As a concrete example of this functional logic, the game features production chains where wheat is processed to create donuts.

A Strategic Genre Expansion

The announcement follows a series of leaks earlier this summer suggesting that Paradox was collaborating with the LEGO Group on a spin-off of its successful simulation franchise. By integrating the LEGO brand into the city-builder genre, Paradox is leveraging its expertise in complex simulation to create a more accessible, creative experience. This move allows the developer to pivot from the strict realism of the main Cities: Skylines series toward a more playful, toy-centric approach to urban planning.

Industry Implications

This partnership represents a strategic expansion for both the LEGO Group and Paradox Interactive. By merging one of the world's most recognizable toy brands with a leading simulation franchise, the project targets two distinct audiences: hardcore simulation enthusiasts and casual creative builders. This crossover has the potential to broaden the overall appeal of the city-builder genre, moving it beyond a niche simulation market into a wider creative space.

Fredrik Löving, SVP and Global Head of Games at the LEGO Group, noted that while building and creativity are central to the LEGO experience, LEGO Skylines takes the brand into "completely new territory."

Platform Availability

LEGO Skylines is slated for release on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Notably, the announcement also confirms the game will be available on the Nintendo Switch 2. While the core gameplay mechanics have been detailed, further specifics regarding the release date and full feature set remain to be seen as development continues at Iceflake Studios.
