Phasmophobia adds Restricted maps and streamlined evidence in QoL update

Kinetic Games rolls out Part 2 of its Quality of Life series to refine gameplay and rebuild community trust.

Kinetic Games has released the second installment of its Quality of Life update for Phasmophobia on PC and PlayStation, with an Xbox version currently pending. The patch focuses on reducing gameplay friction and enhancing atmospheric immersion to better align the experience with player expectations.

Central to the update is the introduction of "Restricted" versions of existing maps, specifically for Prison, Brownstone High School, and Point Hope. These condensed environments are designed to accelerate the pace of investigations. To further streamline the core loop, evidence collection now features faded overlays and yellow LEDs on Sound Recorders, Video Cameras, and Photo Cameras. Additionally, shared team selections for evidence are now visible to all players, reducing the need for manual coordination.

Refining the Experience

The update also brings significant technical improvements to the VR experience. Kinetic Games has implemented a more responsive character rig, which allows for more accurate tracking of a player's real-world body movements. On the atmospheric side, the developers have overhauled death mechanics; players who perish now exhibit greyer skin and mistier eyes, and their voice chat is cut off immediately upon death to heighten the tension.

A Path Toward 1.0

These changes arrive during a period of transition for Kinetic Games. The studio recently issued an apology for the "rocky reception" of its Player Character Update, with the developers admitting they "missed the mark" regarding community expectations. In a statement, Kinetic Games noted that the "frustration and disappointment has been clear" across the community.

This iterative approach to quality-of-life patches is part of a broader strategy to prioritize polish over speed. As a result, the studio has officially delayed the 1.0 launch of Phasmophobia, pushing the release window from 2026 into 2027. This extension is intended to give the team more time to refine the game's systems and ensure the final version meets a higher standard of quality.

Industry Implications

By introducing Restricted maps and UI refinements, Kinetic Games is directly addressing a long-standing player desire for faster-paced sessions and less tedious evidence gathering. This shift suggests a move toward a more accessible gameplay loop that caters to both veteran hunters and casual players who find the larger maps overly cumbersome.

Moving forward, the community will be watching to see if these incremental improvements are enough to fully repair the relationship between the developers and the player base. With the 1.0 launch now a distant target, the focus remains on whether Kinetic Games can maintain this momentum of iterative refinement without introducing further instability.
