Pokémon TCG Pocket Adds Dual-Type Cards in October Update
Mega Mewtwo X ex leads a mechanical shift toward the physical TCG's complexity.
The Pokémon Company is expanding the mechanical depth of Pokémon TCG Pocket with the introduction of dual-type cards arriving this October. The announcement, delivered during a panel at the PokémonXP event in San Francisco, marks a significant shift in how the mobile experience handles Pokémon typing.
The first card to showcase this new mechanic is Mega Mewtwo X ex, a Psychic/Fighting-type Pokémon boasting 180 HP. Mega Mewtwo X ex features a "Dual Impact" ability that deals a base of 100 damage, which increases by an additional 40 if a stadium card is currently in play, making it a potent threat in specific board states. Alongside the dual-type debut, the October update will also introduce new ex cards for the partner Pokémon Piplup and Fuecoco.
A Long-Awaited Transition
While dual-type Pokémon have been a cornerstone of the core video game series since Generation I, their integration into the trading card games has been more gradual. The physical TCG has utilized dual-type cards since the mid-2000s, with more than 90 such cards released over the years. Until now, the Pokémon TCG Pocket mobile experience remained limited to single-type cards, simplifying the game's initial launch but omitting a key element of the franchise's identity.
Strategic Implications
The arrival of dual-type cards introduces a new layer of strategic complexity to the mobile game's competitive meta. By occupying two types simultaneously, these cards alter how players calculate weaknesses and resistances, forcing a re-evaluation of deck construction and matchup strategies. This shift moves the mobile title closer to the nuanced tactical environment of the physical tabletop game, where typing often dictates the flow of a match.
The Road Ahead
Beyond the immediate mechanical changes, The Pokémon Company indicated that this update serves as the starting point for a new series of expansions. This signals a commitment to long-term live service support and a steady broadening of the game's available card pool. Players will be watching to see how many more dual-type Pokémon are introduced following Mega Mewtwo X ex and how the new partner ex cards for Piplup and Fuecoco shift the early-game balance, potentially disrupting established tier lists as the October update rolls out globally.
