Quake Marks 30th Anniversary With Free 'Dawn of the Machine' Expansion

MachineGames and id Software have released a substantial free content update for the 2021 Quake remaster to mark the franchise's 30th anniversary. The expansion, titled 'Dawn of the Machine,' was shadow-dropped during QuakeCon 2026 and is now available across all platforms for existing owners of the game.

The update introduces a full 19-map campaign that utilizes a continuous progression system. This marks a significant structural shift for MachineGames, moving away from the hub-based design seen in their previous Quake expansions. To enhance the combat experience, the developers added new weapon variants, including a lightning-infused Super Axe and a Laser Cannon capable of ricochet blasts. Players will also face modified versions of classic enemies, such as the Blood Shambler and the Rocket Ogre. Complementing the gameplay is a new original soundtrack composed by Christian Plogfors, an Advanced Level Designer at MachineGames.

A Legacy of FPS Innovation

Quake first launched in 1996 via id Software, establishing itself as a landmark title that helped define the first-person shooter genre. The 2021 remaster, handled by Nightdive Studios and Bethesda, brought the classic experience to modern hardware. MachineGames has since become a key collaborator with id Software, previously developing the 'Dimension of the Machine' and 'Call of the Machine' expansions. This latest release aligns with the 30th anniversary of both the original game and the annual QuakeCon event.

The Value of Legacy Support

Providing a full-scale campaign for free three decades after a game's initial debut is an uncommon move in the modern gaming industry. According to the developers, the project is a product of the 'Quake Club' internal culture at MachineGames, which allows staff to collaborate on passion-driven projects outside of their primary AAA responsibilities. Andrew Yoder, Lead Level Designer at MachineGames, stated that the team aimed to create an experience that felt authentic to the original game's spirit of "Horror! Action! Madness!"

The 'Dawn of the Machine' update is available at no additional cost for owners of the Quake remaster on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and other supported platforms. While the core content is now live, the industry will be watching to see if this model of legacy support encourages other studios to provide similar long-term, free expansions for classic titles.
