Robert Pattinson: 'The Batman Part 2' Fight Scenes Are 'Significantly Harder'
The actor admits the physical toll of returning as Bruce Wayne is weighing on him as he ages.
Robert Pattinson has revealed that returning to the role of Bruce Wayne is proving more physically demanding than his first outing. The actor noted that the combat sequences for the upcoming sequel are considerably more taxing to execute than those in the original film.
In an interview with GQ, Pattinson admitted that the physical requirements of the role are weighing on him. "I’m definitely feeling my age when fighting a lot," Pattinson said. "I’m literally like, ‘Goddamn, this is significantly harder than it used to be.’" Despite the struggle, he added that the process remains "really fun."
The cost of production delays
This physical shift is largely a byproduct of the timeline between the two productions. Pattinson was cast as the Caped Crusader in 2019 at age 33, with filming for the first installment taking place throughout 2020 and 2021. The original creative intent was to portray a younger, less experienced version of Batman, distinct from the more seasoned iterations seen in previous franchises.
However, the substantial time gap between the first movie and the sequel has seen Pattinson age into a bracket more similar to that of previous Batman actors, such as Christian Bale and Ben Affleck. The delay has effectively shifted the actor's physical reality, making the high-impact choreography of a superhero film more grueling than it was during the initial shoot.
Industry implications
The situation highlights the often-overlooked physical toll that long production cycles take on blockbuster leads. When a project is delayed by several years, the biological reality of the actor can clash with the scripted age of the character. In this case, there is a distinct irony in Pattinson aging out of the "young" Batman archetype before the sequel could even reach production.
What to watch
Fans will have to wait a while longer to see the results of these grueling rehearsals. The release date for The Batman Part 2 has been moved to February 18, 2028, having been pushed back from its previous October 2027 slot.
While the plot remains under wraps, the film's expanded cast is already generating significant buzz. The sequel is confirmed to include Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, and Brian Tyree Henry, adding new dynamics to the gritty version of Gotham City established in the first film.
