Roblox breaks 'walled garden' with standalone app initiative

The 'Roblox Everywhere' program allows creators to publish games outside the main platform launcher for the first time.

Roblox is decoupling its creator ecosystem from its central launcher to allow games to exist as independent software. The company announced the "Roblox Everywhere" initiative at the 2026 Roblox Developers Conference (RDC), marking a fundamental shift in how the platform distributes content.

Under the new program, creators can publish their games as standalone apps across PC, mobile, and consoles. This removes the previous requirement that players must first launch the main Roblox app to access specific experiences. To maintain the platform's social connectivity, cross-play will be enabled by default, ensuring that players using standalone apps can still play alongside those using the standard Roblox client. Additionally, the company is introducing browser-based joining and a new offline mode specifically for single-player games.

Expanding the Ecosystem

This strategic pivot comes as Roblox seeks to provide greater flexibility to its developers and expand its global reach. The move is paired with an overhaul of the platform's financial infrastructure. Starting in December 2026, Roblox will launch a new wallet feature managed by Airwallex for US-based independent creators, aimed at streamlining real-world revenue payments. These updates arrive during a period of fluctuating market capitalization and persistent industry scrutiny regarding developer earnings and child safety.

From Platform to Engine

By allowing games to escape the central launcher, Roblox is transitioning from a closed "walled garden" toward becoming a broader engine and service provider. This shift lowers the barrier for creators to reach mainstream audiences on traditional storefronts, allowing Roblox to compete more directly with standalone game engines. By maintaining the underlying social and infrastructure layers while removing the distribution bottleneck, Roblox can scale its reach without forcing every user through a single entry point.

The Road Ahead

Roblox intends to roll out the initiative gradually, beginning with a limited group of developers and storefronts. A company representative stated, "We will start with a select set of gaming developers and storefronts to test, and we will share more details soon."

While the company has signaled a desire to expand into various external storefronts, the specific list of partner platforms remains unconfirmed. Industry observers will be watching to see how this openness affects the platform's internal economy and whether it encourages a new wave of high-fidelity, professional-grade titles.
