Rockstar Games embeds research teams in Miami to build authentic GTA 6 world

The studio is leveraging ex-criminals, professional race-car drivers, and local stylists to move beyond caricature in its next open-world epic.

Rockstar Games has deployed an aggressive, decade-long research strategy in Miami to ensure the world of Grand Theft Auto 6 achieves a new level of cultural authenticity. By embedding dedicated teams within the region, the studio is attempting to simulate the complexities of Florida life rather than relying on surface-level stereotypes.

To inform the design of characters and the broader environment, Rockstar embedded a dedicated research team in Miami and dispatched multiple developer groups to the area over the last ten years. The studio conducted extensive consultations with a diverse array of local figures, including law enforcement, club promoters, gun dealers, and ex-criminals. This immersive approach extends to the visual and auditory landscape; the studio hired more than 50 professional street artists to create murals for in-game locations such as the Stockyard, a district based on Miami's Wynwood neighborhood. Additionally, Rockstar has collaborated with Miami stylist Jillian Carr since 2023 to develop a "fashion ecosystem" that captures the city's specific blend of affluence and vanity.

A Shift Toward Total Immersion

This meticulous preparation is part of a broader effort to evolve the series' approach to world-building. While previous entries often leaned into satire, the development of the new Vice City focuses on the contrast between different social strata, from high-end South Beach clubs to Overtown house parties and the local Miami bass music scene. The team aims to move beyond simply finding something "weird" to include in the game, seeking instead a more curious and thoughtful exploration of the region.

This evolution is supported by a massive increase in resources; the development team has more than doubled in size since the release of Red Dead Redemption 2. The studio has also specialized its internal structure, maintaining an entire branch in Los Angeles dedicated solely to NPC dialogue and staffing its vehicle handling team with professional race-car drivers to ensure mechanical precision.

Setting a New Industry Benchmark

By integrating professional consultants from the fashion, art, and automotive industries, Rockstar is signaling a shift toward a deeply researched simulation of a specific American locale. This move away from simple caricature toward high-fidelity cultural realism suggests the studio is attempting to set a new industry benchmark for open-world authenticity.

As development continues, the industry will be watching to see if this level of granular research translates into a more believable living world. While the core gameplay loop remains under wraps, the infrastructure Rockstar has built—from the LA-based dialogue teams to the Miami-based field researchers—indicates that the scale of ambition for GTA 6 is unprecedented in the studio's history.
