Saudi PIF Weighs Merger of Electronic Arts and Savvy Games Group

The move follows a $55 billion buyout of EA and aims to consolidate the kingdom's massive gaming portfolio.

Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) is reportedly considering a merger between Electronic Arts (EA) and its gaming subsidiary, Savvy Games Group. The potential consolidation follows the PIF's recent $55 billion buyout to take EA private, a deal finalized in August 2026.

The PIF, alongside Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, completed the acquisition of EA to bring massive AAA franchises—including Madden, Battlefield, and EA Sports FC—under its control. According to reports, the PIF is now exploring a merger with Savvy Games Group to unify its disparate gaming assets and improve operational coordination across its portfolio. This strategy would integrate EA with Savvy's existing holdings, which include Scopely, acquired for $4.9 billion in 2023, and Niantic's games division, which was sold to Scopely for $3.5 billion in March 2025.

A National Gaming Strategy

This move is part of a broader, aggressive national strategy by the Saudi state to establish itself as a global hub for the gaming and esports industries. Through the Savvy Games Group, the PIF has systematically acquired major entities in the mobile and competitive gaming sectors. The addition of EA represents one of the largest transactions in the history of the medium, shifting the balance of power in the industry toward the Middle East.

Market Dominance and Financial Pressure

If realized, the merger would create an unprecedented global gaming titan under the direct control of the Saudi state. However, the consolidation is also viewed as a necessary financial maneuver. The buyout of EA left the company burdened with a significant debt load, reported to be between $18 billion and $20 billion. By merging EA with Savvy Games Group, the PIF could eliminate duplicated corporate operations and reduce overhead costs to manage this debt.

Industry analysts suggest that such cost-cutting measures could lead to significant layoffs within EA's workforce as the company streamlines its structure to fit the PIF's broader organizational model.

Regulatory and Ethical Outlook

What remains to be seen is how global regulators will view the concentration of such immense industry power under a single sovereign wealth fund. The merger raises significant questions regarding market competition and the ethical implications of state-controlled ownership of some of the world's most popular entertainment franchises. For now, the PIF has not officially confirmed the timeline or the final structure of the proposed merger.
