Sega has introduced a robotic version of its mascot to resolve a fundamental conflict between brand guidelines and battle royale gameplay. The creation of "Android Sonic" allows the character to participate in Fortnite's combat without violating the strict rules governing the primary Sonic the Hedgehog persona.

Sega refused to allow the standard version of Sonic to hold a firearm to protect the character's integrity. To solve this, the company developed Android Sonic, a variant similar to Metal Sonic.
