Sony Reportedly Reviving Killzone via External Partnership

Sony is reportedly in the early stages of reviving the Killzone first-person shooter franchise. The move marks a potential return for one of PlayStation's most storied legacy IPs after years of silence.

According to reports from IGN, Insider Gaming, and VGC, the project is currently in the very early stages of production. The initiative is described as either a remake or a remaster of a previous title in the series. While Guerrilla Games remains the primary steward of the franchise, they are reportedly collaborating with an external studio to execute the project, with People Can Fly strongly indicated as the development partner.

A Shift in Studio Focus

Killzone once served as Sony's premier answer to the high-budget FPS market, positioned as a direct competitor to franchises like Halo. However, the series has been dormant for over a decade; the last mainline entry, Killzone Shadow Fall, arrived as a PlayStation 4 launch title in 2013. Following the massive success of Horizon Zero Dawn in 2017, Guerrilla Games shifted its focus entirely toward the Horizon universe.

This pivot was a conscious creative decision. Roy Postma, Art Director at Guerrilla Games, previously noted that the team felt they were "done with it as a team" and needed to "refresh the palette," describing the vibrant world of Horizon as the intentional opposite of the dark and violent aesthetic that defined Killzone.

Strategic Implications

Returning to Killzone signals a strategic reclamation of a legacy brand and a renewed interest from Sony in the high-budget shooter space. By partnering with an external studio like People Can Fly, Sony can revive the IP without disrupting Guerrilla Games' current production pipeline. The studio is currently balancing commitments to the Horizon franchise, including work on a confirmed cooperative multiplayer spinoff titled "Hunters Gathering."
