Square Enix and Google Gemini Launch Real-World 'Gemini Quest' Event in Tokyo
The AR experience spans four Shibuya and Harajuku locations, marking Square Enix's continued push into generative AI despite mixed fan reception to previous AI features.
Square Enix is bringing Dragon Quest into the physical world with "Gemini Quest," an augmented reality event running July 30 to August 9, 2026, across four locations in Tokyo's Shibuya and Harajuku wards.
Players visit Shibuya 109, MAGNET by Shibuya 109, Tokyo Plaza Harajuku Harakado, and Takeshitaguchi Park, where they use the Google Gemini app to scan QR codes and photograph monster statues. The app generates AR spell effects, creating images of participants battling classic Dragon Quest creatures. Those who complete the quest receive a limited-edition physical "mini medal" featuring monsters like slimes and killer machines, handed out by performers dressed as village NPCs.
The event represents Square Enix's latest experiment with generative AI through its partnership with Google Gemini. It follows the March 23, 2026 announcement of "Chatty Slimey," an AI-powered companion for the Japan-exclusive MMORPG Dragon Quest X. That feature drew divisive reactions from players, with documented criticisms targeting AI accuracy, perceived intrusiveness, and broader concerns about generative AI expanding to future titles.
The "Gemini Quest" format signals a shift from purely digital AI companions to "phygital" experiences that blend real-world locations with generative AI and AR technology. Whether this approach addresses previous concerns about AI integration remains to be seen. The eleven-day run gives Square Enix time to gauge player response to its latest AI-driven initiative.
