Square Enix Directors: Classic FF Remakes Would Need 4-5 Games Each
At FFXIV Fan Fest Berlin, Yoshida and Hamaguchi addressed fan demands for FF6, FF8, and FF9 remakes while tempering expectations about scope and timeline.
Square Enix directors warned at Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest Berlin in July 2026 that remaking classic Final Fantasy titles would require four to five installments each—exceeding even the FF7 Remake trilogy's scope.
The Scale Problem
Producer Naoki Yoshida addressed fan questions about remaking Final Fantasy 6, 8, or 9 using the same expanded approach as the FF7 Remake project.
"But if we did remake those other titles, we'd probably end up having to release them in four or maybe even five instalments," Yoshida said.
The FF7 Remake project began with 2020's Remake, continued with 2024's Rebirth, and will conclude with a third installment titled Revelation. Yoshida's remarks suggest other beloved entries contain enough content to exceed that three-game structure.
No FF6 Remake in Development
Director Naoki Hamaguchi explicitly denied that a Final Fantasy 6 remake is currently in production.
"That's why I can't just sit here and go, 'Yeah, yeah, I'll remake [FF6],' because it's not quite that easy," Hamaguchi said during the same panel.
Square Enix continues to see strong reception for the FF7 Remake trilogy, which has reimagined the 1997 classic with modern graphics, expanded storytelling, and real-time combat systems.
Playful FF17 Speculation
The panel featured lighthearted speculation about Hamaguchi's future projects. Yoshida suggested fans would welcome Hamaguchi taking on Final Fantasy 17 once the FF7 Remake trilogy concludes. Hamaguchi offered an ambiguous response that neither confirmed nor denied involvement.
What This Means for Fans
The directors' comments acknowledge fan demand while signaling realistic development timelines. Framing potential remakes as four or five-game projects indicates any announcement would require significant commitments in development resources and release schedules.
For now, the studio remains focused on completing the FF7 Remake trilogy. Whether FF6, FF8, or FF9 receive similar treatment remains unclear, with Hamaguchi's denial confirming no such project is currently active.
