Square Enix unveils Final Fantasy VII Revelation for April 2027

The concluding chapter of the Remake trilogy embraces a maximalist, open-world design across four platforms.

Square Enix has officially unveiled Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the final entry in the ambitious Remake trilogy, scheduled for release on April 8, 2027. The title aims to conclude the reimagining of the 1997 classic with a scale that exceeds its predecessors.

Launching simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, Revelation adopts what early previews describe as a "maximalist" design. This approach significantly expands the open-world content introduced in Rebirth. A key addition is the "Monster Assessment Instrument" (MAI), a system that provides tactical tips to players and explicitly asks if its notifications have become too intrusive.

A Shift Toward Planetary Scale

The design direction is a deliberate choice by director Naoki Hamaguchi, who has leaned further into open-world sensibilities for the finale. Hamaguchi cited influential titles such as The Witcher 3, Horizon, and Crimson Desert as primary inspirations for creating what is being termed a "planetary scale" experience. This follows the mixed reception of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, where some players criticized the abundance of side content as "bloat."

Industry Implications

This shift represents a definitive departure from the more linear structure of the original 1997 game, signaling Square Enix's commitment to modern RPG trends. By prioritizing a massive, content-dense world, the developer is betting that players prefer an abundance of activity over a streamlined narrative path. As one Eurogamer preview author noted, while those who found Rebirth bloated may struggle with Revelation, they would "much rather have too much to do than too little."

The Final Chapter

As the project reaches its conclusion, the industry will be watching to see if this maximalist philosophy successfully ties together the trilogy's narrative or if the scale overwhelms the storytelling. While critics have praised the refined combat and expanded scope, the tension between expansive exploration and narrative pacing remains a central point of discussion heading into the 2027 launch. The gamble on "planetary scale" reflects a broader industry trend toward maximalism, testing whether the depth of a world can coexist with the tight pacing required for a trilogy's emotional climax.
