Star Wars Zero Company brings XCOM-style tactics to the Clone Wars

Bit Reactor and Respawn Entertainment's upcoming title explores the Republic's political decay through the eyes of mercenaries.

Bit Reactor and Respawn Entertainment have developed 'Star Wars Zero Company,' a turn-based tactics game that shifts the focus of the Clone Wars away from Jedi knights and toward the galaxy's fringes. Published by Electronic Arts, the title is scheduled for release on August 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X/S.

The game follows Hawks, a disgraced Republic officer, and a ragtag crew of mercenaries navigating a conspiracy involving a cult known as the Coil. Gameplay is heavily inspired by XCOM: Enemy Unknown, utilizing isometric battlefields, action points, and cover systems. Players manage permanent base upgrades and a roster featuring nine base classes, which can be mixed and matched to create secondary specializations.

A Ground-Level View of the Republic

Set during the late Republic era, 'Star Wars Zero Company' deliberately avoids the Jedi-centric narrative of the prequel films. Instead, it centers on misfits and mercenaries to highlight the political friction between Republic and Separatist allegiances. By focusing on background players, the game portrays the Republic as a "messy, flawed institution," according to a Polygon reviewer, reflecting how the average citizen experienced the era outside of the Jedi temples on Coruscant.

The Cost of Democracy

This shift in perspective allows the game to explore the rise of fascism and the collapse of democracy with a grounded, "bottom-up" approach. Polygon notes that the game depicts the Republic's slow descent into authoritarianism with "uncomfortable poignancy," achieving a level of narrative depth regarding political decay that the prequel films struggled to execute effectively. By framing the story through the eyes of those marginalized by the system, the game emphasizes the human cost of the galaxy's political shift.

Looking Ahead

As the August release date approaches, the industry will be watching to see if the strategic depth of the XCOM-inspired mechanics translates successfully to the Star Wars universe. While the narrative ambition is high, the final polish of the tactical systems and the execution of the "Infinite Coil" conspiracy will determine if the game can redefine how political conflict is handled in the franchise.
