Subnautica 2 Update 1.2 Adds 'Buddy System' to Deepen Multiplayer Cooperation

Unknown Worlds introduces proximity chat, player revivals, and inventory sharing to shift the survival experience toward interdependence.

Unknown Worlds released the 1.2 "Buddy System" update for Subnautica 2 on August 19, 2026. The patch shifts the multiplayer experience from simple coexistence to active cooperation, introducing social and survival mechanics designed to increase both teamwork and tension.

Central to the update is a new proximity chat system. As players move away from one another, the audio transitions into a radio-like effect, a detail Creative Director Anthony Gallegos noted "definitely adds to the tension" of the deep-sea environment. To support cooperative play, developers implemented a player revival system that allows teammates to share oxygen to bring downed players back to life. Logistics are now streamlined via an inventory sharing feature, enabling players to access a teammate's inventory directly to swap essential items.

Beyond social tools, the update introduces the "Tracking Tag" beacon. These tags can be placed within lockers or the general environment; if a player holds a tag upon death, it extends the range of their black box signal to make recovery easier. The patch also adds diversification options with two new player characters, Grace and Jegna, alongside two additional suit colors. To polish the user experience, Unknown Worlds updated the HUD so that icons scale up on hover to reduce visual clutter, while also improving base builder tools and pinned recipes.

The Shift Toward Cooperation

Subnautica 2 is currently in Early Access, and this update represents a direct response to community feedback. By integrating these multiplayer tools, Unknown Worlds is evolving the game's core loop. The addition of revives and streamlined trading transforms the social bond between players, moving the experience closer to a survival-horror dynamic where interdependence is a necessity for survival rather than an optional benefit.

Future Horizons

While the Buddy System focuses on current mechanics, the update serves as a bridge to future content. Anthony Gallegos provided a glimpse of the upcoming "Early Access 2" update, which is expected to significantly expand the game's scope. This next major phase will introduce new regions, additional story elements, and new vehicles to explore the depths.

Gallegos emphasized the importance of the community-driven development cycle, stating, "we think we make the best games possible when you participate in this development alongside us." Players now await the specific release date of Early Access 2 and the full details of the promised narrative expansions.
