A study conducted by Chetan Mudlapur and Om Prakash Singh from the Indian Institute of Information Technology reveals a "paradox" where the most dedicated players are often the most critical.
Analyzing over 500,000 Steam reviews, the researchers found that "veterans" with more than 200 hours of playtime are significantly more likely to leave negative reviews than those with moderate engagement. This trend is most pronounced in specific genres, including live-service, strategy, fighting, and open-ended survival games. In contrast, the study found that Soulslike, JRPG, and indie games exhibit lower rates of this paradox, as players in those genres typically stop playing early if they are dissatisfied.
The Sentiment Curve
The research identifies a distinct U-shaped relationship between time invested and sentiment. Players with 0-2 hours of playtime predominantly leave negative reviews, a trend the researchers link to Steam's two-hour refund policy. Once players move past this window, sentiment shifts; reviews from those with 2 to 200 hours of playtime are predominantly positive. The study specifically identifies approximately 50 hours of playtime as the "sweet spot" for the highest concentration of positive feedback.
The Sunk Cost Fallacy
This phenomenon suggests that for long-term engagement games, veteran dissatisfaction may be a more accurate indicator of systemic issues or burnout than early negative reviews. The researchers suggest the sunk cost fallacy explains this behavior: players continue to invest time in a game despite growing frustration, eventually leading to harsher critiques once the frustration outweighs the perceived value of the investment.

War Thunder emerged as a primary example of this trend, identified as having the highest "paradox rate." The study notes that veteran dissatisfaction in the title has been sufficient to shift its recent review status from "Mostly Positive" to "Mixed."
