Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Remake Adds RPG Systems and Focus Meter

A new trailer reveals the 1996 remake will feature skill trees, herb crafting, and a time-slowing combat system.

Amazon Game Studios and Crystal Dynamics have released a new behind-the-scenes trailer for Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a remake of the franchise's 1996 debut. The footage confirms a substantial shift in gameplay philosophy, moving the classic puzzle-platformer toward a modern action-RPG hybrid.

Developed by Flying Wild Hog, the remake introduces several new systems. Central to combat is a "focus" meter, which players fill by dealing damage, taking damage, or dodging. Once charged, this meter allows Lara Croft to perform acrobatic maneuvers and slow down time. The game also features a crafting mechanic where players collect and brew herbs to create buffs that either restore health or reduce incoming damage.

Combat is supported by a four-weapon arsenal consisting of baseline dual pistols, a shotgun, SMGs, and an assault rifle. According to Senior System Designer Marcin Steliga, each weapon is designed to support different playstyles and engagement distances. Progression is handled through RPG-like skill trees; however, upgrades are unlocked by discovering artifacts within levels rather than through traditional experience points.

A Divisive Design Shift

This pivot toward RPG elements follows the design philosophy of the "Survivor" trilogy released from 2013 onward. Design Director Jason Epps noted that the ability to increase Lara's power during the Survivor series made players feel "much more engaged," a sentiment the team is bringing to this remake.

However, the inclusion of skill trees and crafting has sparked controversy among the Tomb Raider community. Many fans argue that these mechanics clash with Lara Croft's established identity as a veteran treasure hunter. Critics suggest that these additions are a continuation of the divisive trends seen in the Survivor series, potentially undermining the purity of the original's puzzle-centric exploration.

Release and Platforms

Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled for release on February 12, 2027. The title will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC via Steam, and the Switch 2. While the core narrative remains a remake of the first title, the industry will be watching to see if the blend of classic level design and modern RPG systems can satisfy both nostalgic purists and new players.
