Valve Launches Steam Frame as Open, Streaming-First VR Headset
The new standalone device leverages SteamOS to bring the company's entire PC library to wireless VR.
Valve has released the Steam Frame, a standalone virtual reality headset designed to function as a "streaming-first" gateway to the company's massive software ecosystem. The device aims to eliminate the traditional barriers of PCVR by allowing users to access their Steam library wirelessly.
Powered by an Arm chip and a specialized VR version of SteamOS, the Steam Frame utilizes a provided dongle to stream content from a PC. In interviews with developers Pierre-Loup Griffais and Jeff Leinbaugh, Valve emphasized that the hardware is capable of playing the entire Steam catalog. While the device carries a higher price point than competitors such as the Meta Quest 3, Valve positions the Frame as an evolving piece of hardware rather than a static product.
A Broader Hardware Push
The Steam Frame is part of a wider strategic hardware expansion from Valve, which includes a next-generation Steam Machine and a new Steam Controller. The rollout has not been without friction; a global RAM shortage delayed the simultaneous release of the Steam Frame and the Steam Machine. However, the Steam Controller successfully launched on May 4th with a retail price of $100.
Breaking the Walled Garden
By building the Steam Frame as an open platform, Valve is attempting to bridge the gap between the convenience of standalone VR and the power of high-end PCVR. This approach is a direct contrast to the "walled-garden" ecosystems maintained by other industry leaders. According to Jeff Leinbaugh, the primary goal was to create a wireless experience to overcome a "massive use case friction hump," suggesting that the removal of cables is central to the device's value proposition.

Valve intends for the Steam Frame to evolve over time through community and developer contributions, leveraging the open nature of SteamOS.
