Wolf Haus tests 'Join Us' cult simulator with former cult members
Developer recruits survivors with 50 years of combined experience to playtest a darkly satirical survival sim.
Developer Wolf Haus has recruited four former cult members to playtest its upcoming co-op title, Join Us, in a provocative experiment on authenticity and satire. The playtest sought to gauge how those who lived through the reality of high-control groups react to the gamification of those experiences.
The participants—identified as Jaga, Javier, Ariel, and Elena—bring a combined total of over 50 years of experience within cults to the session. During the playtest, the group engaged with the game's core loops: recruiting followers, establishing beliefs, and building compounds. According to Eurogamer, reactions to the satirical tone were mixed; some participants expressed excitement over farming mechanics, while others remained skeptical of the title's general appeal.
The Mechanics of Manipulation
Join Us is an open-world survival game set against the backdrop of an apocalypse. Players build their own cult from the ground up, focusing on the recruitment of followers to ensure survival. The title supports solo play or cooperative multiplayer for up to four players, allowing groups to manage their organizations together.
Wolf Haus positions the game as a "darkly satirical" take on cult life. The playtest was promoted via a teaser for Gamescom 2026, intentionally highlighting the contrast between survival-sim mechanics and the real-life trauma experienced by the participants. This tension was evident in the feedback; while some found the simulation engaging, one playtester told Eurogamer that "no one's going to like this."
Satire vs. Survival
This approach represents a risky marketing and development strategy. By involving actual survivors, Wolf Haus is testing whether the dark humor and systemic simulation of cult leadership are acceptable or accurate to those who have been victims of such structures. The move pushes the boundaries of the simulator genre, moving beyond simple mechanics into a space that touches on genuine psychological trauma.
For the industry, the experiment raises questions about the ethics of satirical simulations. While survival games often lean into grim themes, the direct involvement of a marginalized group to validate a "darkly satirical" product is a rare move that blends community outreach with provocative promotion.
Road to Release
As Wolf Haus continues to refine the experience based on this feedback, the game is currently scheduled for a March 2027 release. Join Us will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Observers will be watching to see if the developer adjusts the game's tone following the skepticism voiced by the former members, or if the friction between the players and the subject matter becomes a central part of the game's identity.
