Wuchang Hits 5 Million Players as Dev Team Collapses
Leenzee's Soulslike celebrates commercial success while its core developers scatter following internal disputes and staff refusals.
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers has reached 5 million players worldwide, publisher 505 Games announced July 24, 2026—exactly one year after the Soulslike action RPG launched. The milestone arrives as the game's core development team dissolves, marking a stark contrast between commercial success and organizational collapse.
Leenzee, the Chinese studio behind Wuchang, has reportedly dissolved the specialized unit responsible for the game, according to multiple outlets including Eurogamer and VICE.
Director Ousted Before Team Collapse
The disintegration began before Chinese New Year 2026, when director and producer Xia Siyuan was fired from Leenzee, GamingBolt and other outlets reported citing Chinese source GamerSky. His ousting preceded the team's dissolution and appears to have triggered the cascade that followed.
After Xia's departure, remaining staff were reassigned to outsourcing and support work for other projects. According to GameReactor, developers refused these reassignments, contributing directly to the unit's dissolution. Leenzee has not issued an official statement on the matter.
Success Without Stability
The situation underscores a stark disconnect between product performance and creator stability within the gaming industry. Wuchang, set in the land of Shu during the late Ming Dynasty, became a strong seller despite its rocky critical reception. Its player base continued growing throughout 2026, culminating in the 5 million announcement on the game's first anniversary.
Yet the core creative team no longer exists. The specialized development unit that built Wuchang has been disbanded, raising questions about future support, downloadable content, or sequels. With the director departed and staff scattered, the institutional knowledge behind the game has effectively evaporated.
Industry-Wide Pattern
Wuchang's predicament reflects broader turbulence across game development in 2026. Layoffs and restructuring have swept through the industry even as titles achieve commercial success. The Wuchang case stands out because the collapse occurred at a milestone moment—when player engagement suggested the franchise had found its audience.
Whether 505 Games or Leenzee will attempt to reconstitute development capacity remains unclear. The publisher confirmed the player milestone but has not addressed the team's status. For now, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers exists as a successful product orphaned from its creators.
The game's 5 million players represent a significant achievement for a Soulslike from a relatively unknown studio. But without the team that built it, the franchise's future hangs uncertain—proof that commercial validation does not guarantee organizational survival.
