EXL Acquires iMerit to Bridge the 'Final Mile' of Enterprise AI Deployment

The acquisition integrates specialized AI model training and multimodal data annotation into EXL's operational framework for regulated industries.

ExlService Holdings Inc. (EXL) has completed the acquisition of iMerit Technology, a specialist in AI model training and reinforcement learning. The move aims to transition enterprise AI from general experimentation toward the deployment of specialized, purpose-built models.

As part of the deal, iMerit’s capabilities in data annotation and multimodal evaluation are now integrated with EXL’s enterprise data and industry context. Radha Ramaswami Basu, the founder and CEO of iMerit, has joined the New York-based EXL as Executive Vice President and head of iMerit. EXL currently serves the banking, healthcare, and insurance sectors with a global workforce of over 67,000 employees.

The Shift Toward Physical AI

iMerit focuses on high-tech industries including healthcare AI, autonomous mobility, and robotics. To manage complex multimodal data, the company utilizes Ango Hub, a proprietary collaboration platform. This technical expertise is evidenced by iMerit's previous work with Carbon Robotics, where the company used millions of plant images to develop agricultural models for robotic weeding.

This acquisition highlights the growing importance of "Physical AI," where systems must operate in unpredictable, real-world environments. According to Radha Ramaswami Basu, Physical AI requires the ability to interpret noisy multimodal inputs and reason in real time to act safely, rather than simply providing a correct answer.

Bridging the Production Gap

The deal signals a broader market shift where value is migrating from the creation of foundation models to the "final mile" of implementation. Rohit Kapoor, Chairman and CEO of EXL, stated that value is moving toward making AI usable, trusted, cost-effective, and outcome-driven.

By combining iMerit’s expert-led training with EXL’s operational integration, the company intends to bridge the gap between initial AI pilots and production-scale deployment. This is particularly critical for high-stakes, regulated industries where ground truth data and expert human feedback are required to ensure safety and reliability.

What to Watch

Industry observers will now look to see how EXL leverages the Ango Hub platform across its existing client base in insurance and banking. While the integration of iMerit's robotics expertise is clear, the primary challenge remains the scaling of these specialized models within the rigid compliance frameworks of EXL's core enterprise markets.
