ITA Airways Becomes First European Airline to Deploy VR-Robotics Cabin Crew Training

ITA Airways is the first European airline to implement a mixed-reality training system for cabin crew, replacing traditional physical door mock-ups with a robotic setup that simulates the weight and resistance of real aircraft doors.
Haptic Feedback Meets Virtual Training
The system combines virtual reality environments with a programmable robotic arm equipped with force feedback technology. Trainees interact with VR visuals while the robotic arm provides physical resistance matching the actual weight and movement patterns of aircraft doors they encounter in service.
Airlines typically maintain expensive, heavy physical door trainers for each aircraft type in their fleet. The mixed-reality solution eliminates this burden while preserving the muscle memory training critical for emergency situations.
Real-Time Performance Tracking
The training software manages both normal and emergency door operation scenarios. Unlike traditional methods, the system captures real-time data on trainee actions, allowing instructors to monitor performance metrics and ensure safety compliance throughout each session.
ITA Airways developed the system in collaboration with Lufthansa Group, drawing on the German carrier's expertise in aviation training technology.
Fleet Coverage and Expansion Plans
The system is currently deployed for Airbus A-220 doors and over-wing exits, as well as Airbus A-321neo exit doors. ITA Airways plans to expand coverage to additional aircraft types as the technology proves itself in operational training.

The deployment reflects broader industry movement toward mixed-reality training solutions. By combining virtual environments with haptic feedback, airlines can scale training capacity without the spatial and financial constraints of maintaining multiple physical mock-ups.
