KUKA Deploys Alpha AI Orchestration Platform at Ohio Automotive Plant
The company is testing its Automation Management Platform at the KTPO facility to integrate Physical AI with existing industrial hardware.
KUKA has deployed the alpha version of its Automation Management Platform (AMP) at the KUKA Toledo Production Operations (KTPO) facility in Ohio. The move marks a significant step in bridging the gap between traditional industrial automation and AI-driven decision-making in a live manufacturing environment.
The KTPO facility, a 335,000-square-foot operation, produces more than 300 vehicle bodies daily. It has been the sole producer of every Jeep Wrangler sold worldwide since 2006 and has produced the Jeep Gladiator since 2019. To manage this volume, the plant utilizes 285 robots and more than 60,000 connected devices. The newly implemented AMP serves as an open orchestration platform designed to enhance this existing infrastructure with "Physical AI" to boost productivity and operational flexibility.
The Shift to Automation 2.0
First announced at NVIDIA GTC 2026, KUKA AMP is an open, modular API platform. This architecture allows manufacturers to integrate and generalize their own AI models within production via a shared context layer. While the platform's initial focus is on autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), it is part of a broader transition toward "Automation 2.0." This strategy shifts AI from isolated pilot phases to real-world manufacturing at scale, positioning the software as a layer that augments existing assets rather than requiring their replacement.
Implications for Industrial AI
This deployment addresses the persistent problem of "isolated data" in high-volume automotive environments. By creating a closed-loop system that learns from operational data, KUKA aims to turn vast amounts of production information into actionable insights. For the industry, this means the potential to reduce changeover times and increase efficiency without the cost and disruption of a total factory overhaul. Marc Fleischmann, Chief Software and AI Officer at KUKA Group, noted that the future of the sector lies in combining the precision and reliability of proven industrial automation with the capabilities of AI-powered systems.
