Medtronic has launched Touch Surgery Aide, an AI-native surgical computing platform bringing real-time artificial intelligence directly into the operating room. Unveiled at the Society of Robotic Surgery 2026, the platform marks a shift from post-operative insights to intra-operative decision support.

First Application: Instrument Exit Point

The platform's debut application, Instrument Exit Point (IEP), has received FDA clearance for use with Medtronic's Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system. IEP processes surgical video and procedural data in real time, providing surgeons with immediate guidance during procedures.

This evolves the Touch Surgery ecosystem, which grew from Medtronic's acquisition of Digital Surgery. What began as an education app and video-sharing platform for training has transformed into a live compute platform capable of supporting surgeons mid-procedure.

NVIDIA Powers the Edge

Touch Surgery Aide relies on NVIDIA's computing infrastructure, including Holoscan, CUDA, and TensorRT, to handle intensive processing demands of real-time surgical AI. The partnership signals a broader industry move toward high-performance edge computing in the operating room, rather than relying on cloud-based processing.

By keeping computation local, the platform delivers immediate safety alerts and guidance without compromising patient care.

Ecosystem Reach and Expansion

The Touch Surgery ecosystem is already deployed in more than 1,500 operating rooms worldwide, providing an installed base for the new AI capabilities. Medtronic states the platform is designed to support expansion into laparoscopic surgery over time, extending beyond its initial robotic-assisted surgery focus.
