Musk Warns Tesla Optimus Scale-Up Will Be Hardest Manufacturing Challenge Yet

Elon Musk is tempering expectations around Tesla's humanoid robot, warning investors that mass-producing Optimus will surpass the difficulty of any previous vehicle program. During Tesla's second-quarter 2026 earnings call, the CEO described the endeavor as the company's most complex manufacturing challenge to date.
"This is going to be the hardest product to scale manufacturing that we've ever made at Tesla," Musk said.
Unlike Tesla's electric vehicles, which leveraged an existing automotive supply chain, Optimus requires building infrastructure from scratch. Musk explained that nearly every component is new, forcing Tesla to produce specific parts in-house rather than relying on established vendors.
Technical and Logistical Hurdles
The engineering barriers remain significant. Musk highlighted the difficulty of achieving human-level dexterity alongside solving constraints related to memory, logic, and physical packaging. Securing sufficient AI chips further complicates the production roadmap. These technical hurdles must be cleared before the company can focus entirely on volume production.
Despite previous optimism suggesting Optimus could eventually overshadow Tesla's automotive business, Musk emphasized the need for realism regarding the production ramp. "I just want to make sure to calibrate people correctly," he said during the call. This shift in tone marks a departure from earlier projections that promised rapid deployment.
Production Plans and Compensation
To meet demand, Tesla is converting its Model S and X production line in Fremont, California, into a dedicated Optimus facility. Initial output is expected later this year.
The stakes are high for Musk personally. One of the milestones in his latest compensation agreement requires delivering one million Optimus robots over the next decade. Achieving this target depends on overcoming the admitted difficulties in scaling a product where no supply chain previously existed. Failure to meet these production targets could impact the CEO's compensation package.
The success of Optimus represents a potential pivot for Tesla from an automotive manufacturer to a robotics and AI powerhouse. However, the admitted difficulty highlights the gap between AI software capabilities and the physical reality of hardware mass-production.
