Nyamyam's Spirit Ritual brings live-actor ghosts into the home via mixed reality
The upcoming horror title uses FMV and passthrough technology to blend real-world environments with cinematic supernatural performances.
UK-based indie studio Nyamyam has unveiled Spirit Ritual, a supernatural horror experience that leverages mixed reality (MR) to place live-actor ghosts directly into a player's physical living space. The title debuted at the VR Games Showcase on August 13, 2026, signaling a shift toward cinematic realism in immersive gaming.
In Spirit Ritual, players assume the role of a psychic medium tasked with breaking a demonic curse that threatens a character named Shu-Mei Lin. To achieve its atmospheric goals, the game utilizes MR passthrough cameras on headsets such as the Meta Quest and PICO 4. This technology allows the software to composite high-fidelity full motion video (FMV) of real actors over the player's actual furniture and home layout, rather than relying on traditional 3D character models. The game is slated for release on Meta Quest, PICO 4, and SteamVR.
A shift in immersive horror
Traditional VR horror has historically relied on fully virtual environments or basic augmented reality overlays to create tension. By integrating filmed performances of real humans into a user's actual surroundings, Nyamyam is attempting to bridge the gap between synthetic assets and cinematic reality. This approach aims to evoke a deeper sense of the "uncanny," as the boundary between the player's safe, domestic environment and the game's supernatural elements is blurred.
The psychological impact of passthrough
The technical decision to use live-actor FMV in a mixed-reality setting represents a significant departure from standard industry practices. By transforming the player's own home into the primary game world, Spirit Ritual increases the psychological stakes of the experience. The use of passthrough capabilities in modern hardware ensures that the horror is not contained within a digital void, but is instead integrated into the spaces where players feel most secure, amplifying the impact of the supernatural encounters.
Looking ahead
As the industry continues to explore the capabilities of MR hardware, Spirit Ritual serves as a test case for how FMV can be scaled beyond linear storytelling into interactive, spatial gameplay. While the core technical framework and platform targets have been confirmed, further details regarding the full scope of the interactive elements and the final release date remain to be seen.
