Nyamyam's Spirit Ritual Brings Live-Actor Ghosts Into the Home via Mixed Reality

The upcoming horror title blends 3D Full Motion Video with passthrough technology to place realistic paranormal entities in the player's actual living space.

UK-based indie studio Nyamyam has unveiled Spirit Ritual, a supernatural horror experience that integrates live-actor ghosts into the player's physical environment. The title debuted at the VR Games Showcase on August 13, 2026, signaling a shift toward more visceral, home-integrated horror.

Spirit Ritual utilizes 3D Full Motion Video (FMV) combined with mixed reality passthrough cameras to project filmed human actors directly into the user's home. Rather than relying on traditional 3D character models, the game places high-fidelity recordings of live actors as ghosts within the player's real-world surroundings. Players assume the role of a psychic medium, employing hand-tracking to interact with spirit boards and using an in-game camera to document paranormal activity. The title is confirmed for compatibility with Meta Quest, PICO 4, and SteamVR.

The Shift to Passthrough Horror

The game arrives amid a growing trend in mixed reality (MR) development that leverages the passthrough capabilities of modern headsets. Unlike traditional virtual reality, which transports users to a fully digital world, MR horror breaks the fourth wall by blending game elements with the user's actual living space. By utilizing the hardware of devices like the Quest 3 or PICO 4, developers can create experiences where the boundary between the game and the player's private sanctuary is intentionally blurred.

Psychological Impact of FMV

Spirit Ritual is particularly notable for its decision to use FMV instead of synthetic 3D models for its entities. By placing realistic human performances in a domestic setting, Nyamyam aims to amplify the 'uncanny valley' effect—the unsettling feeling produced when a humanoid object looks almost, but not quite, human. This approach increases the psychological tension, as the presence of a filmed human actor in one's own living room can feel more intrusive and threatening than a digital avatar.

Future of Mixed Reality

As MR hardware becomes more accessible, the industry is watching how Spirit Ritual's blend of live-action footage and spatial computing will be received. The success of the title may influence how other horror developers approach the integration of realistic human performances in mixed reality. While the technical foundation is set for multiple platforms, the industry remains focused on how these high-fidelity entities will interact with the diverse and unpredictable layouts of players' actual homes.
