U.S. Navy Taps Blue Water Autonomy for Deep-Ocean Mapping

The Naval Oceanographic Office will deploy long-endurance autonomous vessels to survey the Indian and Pacific oceans.

The U.S. Navy's Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) has selected Boston-based Blue Water Autonomy to provide high-resolution ocean floor mapping. The partnership aims to characterize terrain and acoustics across the Indian and Pacific oceans using long-endurance uncrewed surface vessels (USVs).

Under a multiple-award, indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract, the company will deploy its Liberty Class vessels to conduct these surveys. The Liberty Class is a 190-foot steel autonomous ship featuring a range exceeding 10,000 nautical miles and a payload capacity of more than 150 metric tons. To achieve this capability, Blue Water Autonomy utilized Damen's Stan Patrol 6009 hull design, which was re-architected specifically for autonomous operation. The company expects to complete the first vessel for the U.S. Navy this year under a program of record.

The Shift to Autonomy

Founded in 2024, Blue Water Autonomy integrates hardware, software, and AI to develop ships capable of operating on the open ocean for months at a time. This technological push coincides with a broader U.S. Navy strategy to transition deep-ocean surveys from crewed to uncrewed systems. Traditional crewed survey ships incur high daily operational costs and present significant logistical burdens and personnel risks. By shifting to autonomous fleets, the Navy can increase the total area of ocean coverage while reducing these overheads.

Strategic Implications

This move signals a fundamental shift in naval hydrography toward scalable, autonomous intelligence. Mapping the seafloor and characterizing acoustics in the Indian and Pacific oceans provides the Navy with critical environmental data. This intelligence is essential for determining how naval forces move and operate within remote or contested waters, thereby enhancing strategic maritime awareness without the need for human crews on site.

"Mapping the open ocean is exactly the kind of long, high-endurance work that autonomous vessels are built for," said Rylan Hamilton, CEO of Blue Water Autonomy. Hamilton noted that the selection demonstrates how the company's technology can serve a variety of missions well beyond the typical range of crewed survey ships.

Financial Backing and Outlook

Blue Water Autonomy is scaling its operations following a $50 million Series A funding round led by GV. This investment brings the company's total funding to $64 million, including an initial $14 million seed round. As the Navy continues to integrate these USVs into its operational framework, the focus remains on the successful delivery of the first Liberty Class vessel and the subsequent expansion of autonomous mapping capabilities across the Pacific and Indian theaters.
