VA Pilot Slashes Training Costs with AI-Powered Virtual Reality
A new simulation platform at the North Las Vegas VA Medical Center uses AI virtual humans to train clinicians in high-stakes patient interactions.
The North Las Vegas VA Medical Center has successfully implemented an AI-enabled virtual reality (VR) training platform that increases clinician knowledge while drastically reducing operational costs. Led by simulation technician Bonnie Barti, the initiative allows healthcare staff to practice complex clinical scenarios asynchronously, moving away from traditional classroom-based instruction.
The platform integrates 360-degree video recordings and AI-enabled virtual human patients to simulate realistic clinical environments. To date, the program has developed 25 virtual humans and six specialized training courses. These modules cover critical, high-stakes interactions, including behavioral health, women's health, suicidal ideation, and the management of disruptive behavior.
Scaling Clinical Education
Historically, the North Las Vegas VA lacked dedicated computer-based or VR programs for staff education. The facility relied on in-person classroom sessions, which often created scheduling conflicts and interrupted active patient care. While the VA has previously utilized VR for patient-facing treatments, such as PTSD therapy, this project marks a strategic expansion of the technology into workforce development.
According to Bonnie Barti, the goal was to deliver flexible, realistic training that could be scaled across the VA system without compromising patient care hours. Barti noted that the objective is not to replace human educators, but to provide a safe environment where staff can make mistakes, receive feedback, and iterate on their approach to difficult interactions.
Impact on Performance and Budget
The shift to virtual simulation has yielded measurable gains in both competency and cost-efficiency. Participants in the pilot program demonstrated an average 12.7% increase in performance knowledge.
The financial impact is even more pronounced. Traditional in-person training for a single scenario cost approximately $130 per person. Under the new VR model, that cost dropped to approximately $11.29 per person per session. This represents an 11.5-fold reduction in spending, allowing the facility to offer high-fidelity simulation at a fraction of the previous price point.
The Future of VA Training
By transforming healthcare education from a rigid schedule into an on-demand digital library, the VA is removing the time and budget barriers that often hinder crisis intervention training. This model allows clinicians to sharpen de-escalation skills in a controlled setting before applying them in real-world patient encounters.
As the program continues, the VA will likely look to expand the library of virtual humans and scenarios. The success of the North Las Vegas pilot provides a blueprint for other VA facilities to integrate AI-driven simulations into their standard professional development workflows.
