Valve Adds Wired USB-C Streaming to Steam Link for Meta Quest Beta

A new public beta allows Quest users to bypass Wi-Fi instability by connecting directly to PCs via cable.

Valve has launched a public beta for Steam Link on Meta Quest headsets that introduces support for wired streaming via USB-C. The update allows users to connect their headsets directly to a PC, providing a physical alternative to the app's previous wireless-only requirement.

According to Road to VR, the feature is currently available for testing within the public beta channel. By utilizing a USB-C connection, the update enables the streaming of SteamVR content without relying on a local wireless network. This wired path is specifically intended to provide a more stable connection for PC VR content, mitigating the performance dips often associated with wireless streaming.

The Shift from Wireless

Until now, Steam Link functioned exclusively as a wireless solution for streaming SteamVR content to Meta Quest devices. It was positioned as a free alternative to Meta's proprietary Quest Link software and third-party applications such as Virtual Desktop. However, wireless VR streaming is notoriously dependent on hardware quality; users frequently encounter latency spikes and bandwidth bottlenecks unless they possess high-end Wi-Fi 6 or 6E routers.

Impact on Accessibility

This transition to wired support significantly lowers the barrier to entry for high-fidelity PC VR. By eliminating the requirement for a pristine wireless environment, Valve makes the Quest ecosystem more accessible to users who lack professional-grade networking gear or those operating in areas with high signal interference. The reduction in latency provided by a physical cable is critical for maintaining the immersion and comfort necessary for long-term VR sessions.

What to Watch

As the feature remains in public beta, users should monitor for stability improvements and potential compatibility issues across different USB-C cable standards. It remains to be seen if Valve will introduce further optimizations for wired throughput or if this will lead to a permanent shift in how Steam Link is marketed against Meta's own wired Link solutions.
