VirtuaLens Launches 'Mix and Match' VR Simulation for Cataract Counseling

VirtuaLens has launched a "Mix and Match" feature for its immersive virtual reality (VR) intraocular lens (IOL) simulator. The update allows cataract patients to visualize personalized treatment strategies by simulating different lens technologies in each eye simultaneously.

This functionality enables surgeons to demonstrate vision optimization across multiple distances by pairing different IOL types—such as a multifocal lens in one eye and an extended depth of focus (EDOF) lens in the other. Alongside this, the company introduced a "Monovision Dominance Invert" function. This tool allows patients to switch their simulated eye dominance during consultations, providing a direct comparison of different monovision configurations.

The Challenge of IOL Selection

Cataract surgery requires replacing the eye's clouded natural lens with an artificial IOL. Patients must navigate a complex array of options, including monofocal, multifocal, and various premium lenses. As treatment becomes more individualized, surgeons increasingly combine different lens technologies between the two eyes to achieve specific visual outcomes. Traditionally, these nuanced strategies have been difficult to communicate using standard 2D brochures or videos, often leaving patients to rely on abstract descriptions of how their vision will change.

Impact on Patient Counseling

By allowing patients to "try on" lens combinations in a VR environment, VirtuaLens aims to reduce the reliance on theoretical explanations. This immersive approach is designed to increase patient confidence and trust while streamlining the counseling process for surgeons.

"VirtuaLens represents a paradigm shift in cataract patient counseling," said Robert Osher, MD of the Cincinnati Eye Institute. "Patients can now experience a side-by-side preview, showing how different strategies and lenses affect their vision in everyday situations."

John Branch, MD, CEO and Co-Founder of VirtuaLens, noted that experiencing lens options before surgery empowers surgeons to guide patients toward the correct IOL choice with greater clarity and certainty. To ensure these tools are accessible to practices of various sizes, the platform operates on a scalable software-as-a-service (SaaS) model.

Future Outlook

The integration of VR into the preoperative workflow marks a move toward highly personalized surgical planning. As more practices adopt immersive simulators, the industry will likely see a shift in how patient expectations are managed for premium IOLs. While the current update focuses on the simulation of lens combinations and dominance, the broader trend suggests a growing reliance on digital twins and visual simulations to eliminate the guesswork inherent in refractive surgery.
