AI-RAN Alliance Launches to Standardize AI-Native 6G Networks

A coalition of 11 tech giants, including NVIDIA and Samsung, aims to integrate artificial intelligence directly into wireless radio access networks.

The AI-RAN Alliance launched at Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2024 to accelerate the convergence of artificial intelligence and wireless communication. This strategic shift toward AI-native architectures aims to redefine global standards for 5G and the upcoming 6G era.

The alliance comprises 11 founding members, including hardware and software leaders NVIDIA, Arm, Microsoft, and Samsung, alongside network providers SoftBank, Nokia, and Ericsson, and academic partner Northeastern University. To execute its technical roadmap, the group established three working groups: 'AI for RAN,' focusing on spectrum, cost, and energy efficiency; 'AI and RAN,' targeting resource management and infrastructure utilization; and 'AI on RAN,' which explores new AI-driven applications and services.

The Shift to AI-Native Infrastructure

The telecommunications industry is transitioning from treating AI as an external add-on to developing 'AI-native' networks where AI is an integral component of core functionality. This evolution is a prerequisite for 6G, which will demand higher capacity, deeper automation, and greater energy efficiency than current 5G deployments. SoftBank has already piloted a combined AI and 5G network utilizing the Nvidia AI Aerial accelerated computing platform.

The Battle for Technological Sovereignty

This push for standards is a geopolitical and economic contest for technological sovereignty. By uniting hardware giants with network operators, the AI-RAN Alliance intends to build a unified ecosystem to prevent market fragmentation and ensure AI-driven optimization becomes the global benchmark for next-generation connectivity. As Charlie Zhang, Senior Vice President at Samsung Research America, noted, the alliance is intended to foster collaboration and drive innovation to usher in a new era of transformation for 6G networks.

Future Outlook

Industry observers are now watching for the transition from working-group theory to commercialized hardware. The primary challenge remains the establishment of technical standards that all global carriers can adopt. While the alliance provides a powerful coalition of stakeholders, the timeline for the first fully AI-native 6G commercial deployments remains uncertain.
