Astroport and XelerateVR Partner to Teleoperate Lunar Construction Robots

A new strategic partnership aims to decouple human operators from the hazards of the lunar surface using omnidirectional VR treadmills.

Astroport Space Technologies and XelerateVR have entered a strategic partnership to develop a high-fidelity teleoperation system for lunar construction. The collaboration allows human operators to control humanoid robots on the Moon from the safety of pressurized habitats, removing personnel from immediate physical danger.

Announced on August 19, 2026, the system integrates XelerateVR’s omnidirectional treadmills and VR headsets to mirror an operator's physical actions in real-time. The setup allows a worker to walk, reach, grip, and kneel within a virtual environment, with a humanoid robot on the lunar surface replicating those exact movements. The partnership was facilitated by GTIF Capital, with Managing Partner David Chen joining the Boards of Advisors for both firms.

The Challenge of Lunar Labor

Lunar construction presents extreme environmental risks that make traditional human labor perilous. The partnership specifically targets the mitigation of threats posed by abrasive lunar regolith dust, volatile temperature swings, and the constant risk of spacesuit punctures. While Astroport specializes in lunar architecture and materials manufacturing using native resources, XelerateVR provides the immersive simulation hardware necessary to bridge the gap between a safe interior and a hostile exterior.

Sam Ximenes, Founder and CEO of Astroport Space Technologies, noted that the primary goal is to bring skilled human judgment to a construction site without risking a human body, describing the challenge as a matter of survival on the Moon. Marvin Fachtner, CEO of XelerateVR, added that the vision replaces the image of astronauts with power tools with a worker in a safe habitat wearing a headset and walking on a treadmill.

Implications for the Cislunar Economy

This shift toward safe infrastructure development is critical for the scalability of the emerging Cislunar economy. By maintaining high-fidelity control while decoupling the operator from the environment, the companies aim to make lunar development more sustainable. Beyond active construction, the platform is designed for astronaut training through virtual reconstructions of landing sites and to support psychological well-being during long-duration missions by providing virtual walks through cities or forests.

Future Outlook

As the partnership progresses, the focus will remain on refining the synchronization between the VR hardware and the humanoid robotics. While the teleoperation framework provides a solution for the need for human dexterity, the industry continues to monitor how these systems will handle the latency and communication hurdles inherent in Earth-Moon or habitat-to-surface links.
