California Startup GRU Space Targets 2032 for First Lunar Hotel
Backed by Y Combinator and Nvidia, the startup is accepting six-figure deposits for an inflatable moon habitat.
Galactic Resource Utilization Space (GRU Space) has announced plans to establish the first commercial hotel on the Moon by 2032. The California-based startup is moving beyond theoretical planning by actively accepting reservations with deposits ranging from $250,000 to $1 million.
According to the company, the initial lunar facility will be an inflatable habitat constructed on Earth and transported to the lunar surface via a heavy lander. Once deployed, the structure is designed to operate for a decade, initially hosting up to four guests for multi-day stays. The project is supported by high-profile venture backing, including Y Combinator and Nvidia's accelerator program.
The Three-Phase Roadmap
To reach the 2032 opening date, founder Skyler Chan has outlined a three-mission strategic roadmap. The first phase, Mission I, focuses on the deployment of a pressurized test payload to verify environmental stability. Mission II will involve the establishment of a lunar cave base, a critical step intended to provide natural radiation shielding for future inhabitants. The process culminates in Mission III, which will see the final deployment of the hotel habitat.
Scaling Lunar Habitation
This initiative is part of a broader shift toward the commercialization of space, coinciding with renewed government efforts to return humans to the Moon. GRU Space intends to utilize In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) to evolve its infrastructure. By eventually using lunar regolith to create "moon bricks," the company aims to transition from a small-scale tourist destination to a permanent lunar base. This long-term vision positions the hotel as a stepping stone toward supporting the eventual colonization of Mars.
Industry Implications
While the project is highly ambitious, it signals a transition in lunar exploration from purely government-funded scientific research to venture-backed commercial infrastructure. If successful, the project would prove that luxury civilian habitation is viable outside Earth's orbit. "We’re not imagining life beyond Earth," the company stated. "We’re engineering the next human frontier."
Technical Hurdles
Despite the backing of major accelerators, the technical challenges of maintaining a pressurized inflatable habitat for ten years in the lunar environment remain significant. Industry observers will be watching the results of Mission I to determine if the startup's timeline is realistic. While deposits are being collected, the full cost of a completed ticket to the lunar surface has not been officially confirmed by the company.
