Chicxulub Impact Triggered Global Firestorm, Not Just Nuclear Winter

New research reveals the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs delivered a lethal thermal pulse before the long cooling began.

Sixty-six million years ago, a 10 to 15-kilometre-wide asteroid slammed into what is now the Yucatán Peninsula and Gulf of Mexico. For decades, scientists focused on the aftermath: dust blocking sunlight, triggering a "nuclear winter" that starved ecosystems into collapse. New research reveals something far more immediate killed land-dwelling species first.

The First 30 Minutes

According to a 2026 study led by Brandon Johnson at Purdue University, published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, the impact vaporized more than 1,000 cubic kilometres of rock within approximately one second. That vaporized material blasted into space before re-entering the atmosphere as spherules, generating an intense pulse of thermal radiation that engulfed the entire planet.

"For about 30 minutes, the land is turned into history's largest barbecue," said Craig O'Neill of Queensland University of Technology.

The numbers are staggering. Cretaceous animals on land received approximately 17 times the dose of thermal radiation that is 100 percent lethal to humans. No amount of thick skin or size offered protection. The heat arrived globally, simultaneously, and indiscriminately.

A Trapped Heat Blanket

The firestorm did not end when the re-entry pulse faded. According to Johnson and colleagues, the fine dust cloud created by the impact trapped thermal radiation and prevented heat from escaping to space, intensifying surface heating and likely igniting vegetation across continents.

This atmospheric blanket transformed what might have been a brief thermal spike into a sustained inferno. While the exact duration of the fires remains uncertain, the mechanism explains why terrestrial ecosystems collapsed so completely while some marine species initially survived the impact itself.

Rewriting the Extinction Narrative

The findings shift scientific understanding of the K-Pg extinction from a singular cooling catastrophe to what O'Neill describes as "a cascading system of failures." The nuclear winter still occurred and still explains marine extinctions like those of mosasaurs and ammonites. But for dinosaurs and other land animals, death arrived first as heat, then as cold.

The research underscores how planetary-scale catastrophes operate through multiple, compounding mechanisms. An impact begins with vaporization and thermal radiation, transitions to global wildfires, and only then settles into the long darkness that has dominated extinction theories for generations.

For paleontologists, the study resolves a longstanding puzzle: why some species with apparent advantages for surviving cold, dark conditions still vanished without trace. The answer lies in those first 30 minutes, when the sky itself became a weapon.
