China's space program returned to operational status on August 16, 2026, with two successful launches following a critical propulsion failure. The rapid recovery ensures that the nation's aggressive timeline for global internet infrastructure remains intact.

On August 16, China successfully deployed a Long March 12 and a Long March 2C rocket. These flights follow a significant setback on August 10, when a Long March 7A rocket exploded approximately 90 seconds after liftoff. The successful August 16 missions served as a technical validation, clearing other members of the modern Long March series to resume flight. This was particularly critical because components of the YF-100 series engines were suspected culprits in the August 10 explosion.

The GuoWang Expansion

The Long March 12 Y8 mission specifically carried nine satellites for the GuoWang connectivity constellation. This latest deployment brings the total number of GuoWang spacecraft currently in orbit to 195. Operated by the state-owned China Satellite Network Group, the constellation is designed to provide worldwide internet services.

The Long March 12 vehicle, developed by the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, is a two-stage rocket. To maximize performance, the vehicle utilizes a specialized 'GN-1' propellant in its second stage, allowing for the efficient delivery of large satellite batches.

Strategic Implications

The speed of this return to flight demonstrates China's capacity to diagnose and resolve high-stakes propulsion failures without enduring lengthy grounding periods. By quickly validating the YF-100 engine series, the China Satellite Network Group avoids significant delays in its deployment schedule.

Maintaining this momentum is essential for China's goal of competing in the global satellite internet market. The scale of the ambition is vast: China plans to deploy 310 GuoWang satellites in 2026 and 900 in 2027. Starting in 2028, the pace is expected to accelerate to 3,600 satellites annually, with the total constellation potentially reaching 13,000 spacecraft by the 2030s.

With the Long March series now cleared for flight, observers will be watching for the frequency of upcoming GuoWang launches to see if the program can meet its 2026 target of 310 satellites.
