CSA Launches ICARUS 2026 Stratospheric Campaign in Northern Ontario

The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) is launching the ICARUS 2026 campaign from August 15 to 23, utilizing the Timmins Stratospheric Balloon Base in Northern Ontario. The initiative provides students and researchers a critical testing ground for space-bound hardware before they commit to expensive orbital launches.
During the nine-day window, the CSA will deploy meteorological balloons designed to reach altitudes of up to 35 kilometers. The campaign features a mix of academic and youth-led research, including five university-grade payloads and 15 high-school experiments. The primary goal is to offer students a unique opportunity to design, build, and test small payloads within a stratospheric expandable balloon system.
A Collaborative Near-Space Laboratory
This campaign operates under the STRATOS program, a collaborative effort between the CSA and the French space agency (CNES). Established in either 2011 or 2012, the STRATOS program creates a sustainable framework for stratospheric research. The Timmins facility serves as a "near-space laboratory," allowing researchers to validate hardware in an environment that mimics the harsh conditions of space without the logistical and financial burdens of a rocket launch.
Expanding Access to Space Research
By integrating academic research and youth education, the ICARUS 2026 campaign lowers the barrier to entry for the next generation of aerospace engineers. The high-school component is particularly robust, with 12 projects contributed by Science Timmins and three projects provided by the West Island Black Community Association. This inclusive approach ensures a broader demographic of students gains hands-on experience with the engineering lifecycle, from design to recovery.
