Deep Science Ventures (DSV) is attempting to overhaul the commercialization of deep tech by reversing the traditional relationship between scientific discovery and market application. Rather than investing in existing breakthroughs, the UK-based firm operates as a "venture creator" that identifies critical global problems before engineering the technology to solve them.
Unlike traditional venture capital firms that seek out founders with existing intellectual property, DSV builds its IP in-house. The firm identifies a systemic global risk and then works backward to determine the exact technical intervention required. According to Will Summers, a senior associate at DSV, starting with the problem allows the firm to determine which technology is actually the right tool for the job.
The shift from technology-push to market-pull
Most deep-tech startups follow a "technology-push" model, where a scientist develops a breakthrough in a university setting and a VC later helps find a commercial use for it. DSV argues that this academic structure is not designed for expansive problem-solving and is inherently inefficient.
To counter this, DSV employs a "market-pull" or "problem-first" approach rooted in first-principles thinking. The firm maps out cascading global risks using concrete metrics, such as disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for climate adaptation, to quantify the impact of various crises. Only after this mapping process does the firm begin the technical engineering phase to create a viable company.
Engineering product-market fit
This model aims to eliminate the common "valley of death" for deep-tech startups, where a technically brilliant product fails because it lacks a clear market need. By engineering the technology specifically to address a pre-identified gap, DSV intends to bake product-market fit into the company's DNA from day one.
If scalable, this shift could fundamentally change how the industry tackles systemic issues like food security and climate change. By moving the focus from "what can this tool do?" to "what does the world actually need?", the venture creator model seeks to increase the success rate of companies tackling the world's most complex challenges.
The path forward
While DSV claims this approach is orders of magnitude more efficient than the traditional university spinout model, the long-term scalability of in-house IP creation remains to be seen. Observers will be watching to see if this centralized engineering approach can consistently produce viable companies at a higher rate than the decentralized academic model it seeks to replace.
