Dhruva Space Pivots to Product-Driven Model to Scale India's Global Space Share
The Hyderabad-based firm is targeting a $50 million funding round to transition from a services model to full-stack engineering solutions.
Dhruva Space is shifting its operational strategy to transition from a services-led model to a product-driven approach to better compete in the international arena. The move aims to elevate India's presence in a global space economy where the country currently holds less than 2% of the market.
Based in Hyderabad, Dhruva Space operates as a full-stack space engineering solutions provider, managing operations across the space, launch, and ground segments. To fuel this expansion and accelerate product development, CEO and founder Sanjay Nekkanti has targeted a $50 million Series B funding round. The company is now actively pursuing international clients alongside its domestic portfolio to scale its reach.
The Shift to NewSpace
This strategic pivot comes as the Indian space sector undergoes a fundamental transformation. For decades, the industry was dominated by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), but the opening of the sector to private players has birthed a "NewSpace" ecosystem. These private firms are moving away from acting as mere contractors for government agencies and are instead focusing on creating scalable, proprietary products designed for a worldwide customer base.
Solving Fragmented Supply Chains
By positioning itself as a full-stack provider, Dhruva Space intends to address the systemic inefficiencies of orbital missions. Currently, the industry suffers from fragmented supply chains that increase both financial risk and development timelines.
"Typically having a space mission in orbit entails working with multiple suppliers," Nekkanti told Global Indian. "This has a huge impact on cost, reliability and turnaround times."
If private Indian firms successfully execute this pivot toward a product-driven global strategy, it could significantly increase India's share of the global space economy. By consolidating the engineering stack, Dhruva Space aims to reduce the overhead and complexity that typically plague satellite deployment.
Future Outlook
As Dhruva Space pursues its Series B funding, the industry will be watching whether this integrated model can successfully displace the traditional multi-supplier approach. The company's ability to secure international contracts will serve as a primary indicator of whether Indian private aerospace firms can move beyond domestic support roles to become primary product exporters in the global market.
