Mainland Europe will experience its first total solar eclipse in nearly three decades on August 12, 2026. This rare alignment brings a narrow path of totality across the North Atlantic and European regions, marking the first such event visible from the continent since 1999.
The path of totality will sweep across Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and parts of Russia. Observers within this narrow corridor will witness the Moon completely block the Sun, plunging the landscape into darkness. At its peak, the maximum duration of totality is projected to last 2 minutes and 18.2 seconds.
The Rarity of Totality
Total solar eclipses occur when the Moon aligns perfectly between the Earth and the Sun. While these events happen globally on a regular cycle, they are exceptionally rare for any single geographic coordinate. On average, a specific spot on Earth experiences a total solar eclipse only once every 375 to 400 years.
