The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) has established the Gatan Technology Center (GTC) to provide South Korean researchers with expanded access to high-end electron microscope analysis tools. The center operates as an open research platform designed to bridge the gap between academic infrastructure and industry-leading technology.

Located within the existing electron microscope room of the Advanced Analysis Center at GIST's Central Equipment Research Institute, the GTC is the result of a business agreement between GIST, global analysis solution provider Gatan, and Rotis Korea, Gatan's official distributor. Under the terms of the partnership, GIST provides the necessary facilities, while Gatan supplies the specialized equipment, software, and professional personnel. Rotis Korea manages the center's technical support and educational programming.

The Role of Advanced Analysis

Electron microscopy is a fundamental pillar of modern materials science, allowing researchers to analyze the structure and composition of materials at the atomic or molecular level. To support this, Gatan provides a suite of critical hardware and software, including direct electronic detectors, digital cameras, energy filters, and specialized image analysis software. These tools are essential for precise material characterization and structural discovery.

By transforming a portion of its campus into a cooperative hub, GIST is extending these capabilities beyond its own faculty to the broader domestic research community.
