Greece Deploys €350M HELLAS-SPACE 2.0 Program to Combat Wildfires

Greece has launched HELLAS-SPACE 2.0, a €350 million expansion of its national space strategy designed to bolster security and disaster response infrastructure. The initiative marks a strategic shift toward orbital autonomy to protect the Mediterranean nation from recurring environmental crises.
Led by the Ministry of Digital Governance and the Hellenic Space Centre (HSC), the program is funded via the Recovery and Resilience Facility. A primary achievement of this phase is the deployment of the Hellenic Fire System, consisting of four thermal satellites developed in collaboration with German aerospace firm OroraTech. These satellites provide near real-time monitoring of wildfire fronts and heat anomalies, operating across both day and night cycles to provide critical data to emergency services.
Strategic Shift in Observation
For years, Greece relied heavily on international satellite systems for Earth observation, often facing delays in data acquisition during emergencies. This transition began with a previous €200 million National Microsatellite Program, conducted in partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA), which aims to construct and launch 15 microsatellites by 2026. The move to HELLAS-SPACE 2.0 accelerates this trajectory, prioritizing high-resolution, autonomous data streams over third-party providers.
Impact on Civil Protection
By owning its constellation and ground infrastructure, Greece significantly improves its operational readiness. The integration of thermal imaging and AI into the ENGAGE command platform allows the state to move from reactive firefighting to proactive management. Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou stated that the country is entering "a new era in Civil Protection, where information arrives not after the event, but in near real time."
Future Outlook
Beyond disaster management, the HSC is expanding its international footprint. The center is pursuing new collaborations to boost research and innovation in space technologies, focusing on the intersection of orbital data and ground-level emergency response.
