Hanwha and KAIST Launch 5th Cohort of Space Talent Program for Middle Schoolers

Thirty students begin year-long aerospace education as Hanwha commits 55 trillion won to space infrastructure through 2040.

Hanwha Group and KAIST launched the fifth cohort of 'Pebbles of the Universe' (우주의 조약돌) on July 25, 2026, gathering 30 middle school students at the Hanwha Building in Seoul for a year-long space technology program.

The initiative targets first and second-year middle school students from across South Korea, selected through essay reviews and discussion-based interviews. Participants will study 'Space Technology for Korea' under KAIST aerospace engineering faculty through year-end.

Program Benefits and Outcomes

Graduates receive a certificate signed by the KAIST President, along with opportunities to attend the KAIST Gifted Education Center, access to KAIST mentoring, and visits to overseas space agencies. The curriculum builds foundational knowledge in aerospace engineering at an early stage.

"Through 'Pebbles of the Universe,' we will steadily cultivate the talent that will lead the domestic space industry," said a Hanwha Group official.

Broader Investment Context

The program fits into Hanwha's larger aerospace strategy. The conglomerate has pledged 55 trillion won through 2040 to build integrated space infrastructure, including independent launch vehicles, satellite networks, and a defense AI data center in Changwon.

Hanwha has been actively increasing its stake in Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), reaching 12.44% as of July 2026. The company plans to exceed 15% ownership by year-end, shifting from passive investment to active management participation in the aerospace sector.

Industry Implications

The space industry increasingly demands integrated capabilities spanning launch vehicles, satellite operations, and artificial intelligence. By fostering talent from middle school age, Hanwha and KAIST aim to build a sustainable pipeline for South Korea's long-term competitiveness in the global space race.

This marks the fifth iteration of the initiative, reflecting continued commitment to early-stage aerospace education.
