IBM and Lockheed Martin to Install Switzerland's First Dedicated Quantum System Two

IBM and Lockheed Martin have partnered to establish the Swiss Quantum Innovation Hub at ETH Zurich, bringing the country's first dedicated IBM Quantum System Two to the region. The initiative, structured as an offset agreement with armasuisse, Switzerland's Federal Office for Defence Procurement, marks a significant expansion of quantum computing infrastructure in Europe.

The system is scheduled for installation at the Swiss National Supercomputing Center (CSCS) in Lugano, with completion expected by the end of 2026. The hardware will be powered by the 'Quantum Nighthawk' processor, which IBM identifies as its most advanced processor. The project integrates Lockheed Martin's expertise in additive manufacturing and quantum sensing with IBM's capabilities in AI and quantum computing.

A Strategic Research Foundation

This deployment is the result of a long-term strategic alignment, building upon a 10-year foundational algorithmic research and co-design effort between IBM and ETH Zurich. By anchoring the hub at one of the world's leading technical universities, the partnership aims to bridge the gap between theoretical algorithmic research and physical hardware implementation.

Joël Mesot, President of ETH Zurich, stated that the project provides Switzerland with essential research infrastructure to advance the exploration of emerging technology and educate the necessary talent to support it. This academic integration ensures that the hardware is paired with a pipeline of skilled researchers and developers.

Industrial and Defense Implications

The arrival of the Quantum System Two is expected to accelerate breakthroughs across several high-stakes sectors. In the aerospace industry, the focus will be on improving navigation systems and the manufacturing of advanced metallic alloys. Beyond defense, the partners anticipate significant impacts on chemistry, materials science, and financial services.

By providing dedicated local access to world-class hardware, the hub reduces reliance on cloud-based quantum access and allows for more intensive, specialized research.

The Path to 2026

As the installation progresses toward its 2026 deadline, the focus will shift toward integrating the system into the CSCS ecosystem in Lugano. While the hardware specifications are set, the primary objective remains the development of a "quantum-ready" workforce capable of utilizing the Nighthawk processor for real-world applications.
