Ice Age humans selectively targeted female woolly mammoths, according to a new genomic study that resolves a long-standing archaeological mystery. The findings suggest that human hunting patterns fundamentally altered the demographic makeup of mammoth populations between 20,000 and 30,000 years ago.

An international research team analyzed ancient DNA from 521 woolly mammoth specimens, including 448 individuals sequenced for the first time. The data revealed a striking disparity: 70% of the remains found in bone accumulations associated with Upper Paleolithic human activity were female. In contrast, remains found in natural depositional settings—such as sinkholes or landslides—were biased toward males, who made up 66% of those samples. This divergence provides a clear behavioral signature of human intervention.

The Bone Pile Debate

For decades, archaeologists have debated whether the massive accumulations of mammoth bones discovered across Eurasia resulted from natural disasters or deliberate human butchery. By using paleogenomic sex inference, researchers established a natural baseline for mammoth deaths. David Díez del Molino of Stockholm University noted that comparing these genetic sex ratios allows researchers to infer that human activity was the primary driver behind the archaeological bone accumulations.

Beyond hunting patterns, the study uncovered a rare genetic anomaly. Researchers identified X0/XX mosaicism in a mammoth from Wrangel Island, a condition analogous to Turner syndrome in humans. This marks the first time such a condition has been documented in an extinct species.

Demographic Consequences

The selective harvesting of females may have had devastating impacts on the species' survival. By targeting reproductive females, Ice Age hunters may have inadvertently accelerated the decline of the woolly mammoth by thinning the population segment required for growth. Audrey Rowe, a paleoecologist at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, described this as a new line of evidence suggesting that humans contributed to the species' eventual extinction.

Future Implications

While the data confirms a preference for females, the exact motivation remains a subject of study. Hannah Moots of the Center for Palaeogenetics cautioned that while it is tempting to assume hunters targeted females because they were smaller than adult males, the reality may have been more complex. Reports from Smithsonian Magazine suggest the bias could also be attributed to the fact that female-led herds moved more predictably across the landscape than solitary males.

Researchers will now determine if this selective hunting was a universal strategy across different regions or a localized behavior. The study leaves open the question of whether this targeted pressure was the decisive factor in the mammoth's collapse or one of several compounding stressors.
