ISRO Chairman Dr. V Narayanan has defended the expansion of private sector participation in India's space industry, stating that the state agency cannot independently meet the nation's growing requirements. The comments come as the Indian government pushes reforms to transition the sector toward a hybrid economy.

Speaking following the September 4, 2026, launch of the Earth Observation Satellite (EOS-05) aboard the GSLV-F17, Dr. Narayanan emphasized the scale of the current gap in orbital infrastructure. According to the ISRO Chairman, India currently operates 56 satellites, while the actual requirement is estimated to be in the hundreds. "Our country’s space economy has to grow, and the space ecosystem has to grow because ISRO alone cannot meet the needs of the country," Narayanan stated, citing a need for over 200 satellites within the next three years.
