JAXA Unveils Spacecraft for First-Ever Sample Return from Martian Moons

Japan's space agency, JAXA, has unveiled the spacecraft for the Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission, a pioneering effort to return the first-ever samples from the Mars region to Earth. The mission represents a significant leap in planetary exploration, targeting the Martian moons to unlock secrets of the early Solar System.

The MMX spacecraft is scheduled for launch in Japanese Fiscal Year (JFY) 2026. Once it reaches the Martian sphere, the probe will enter a Quasi-Stationary Orbit (QSO) around Phobos to conduct detailed observations and sampling operations. JAXA officials state the mission aims to collect 10 grams or more of surface material from at least two distinct locations on Phobos. The entire round-trip journey from Earth to the Martian system and back is expected to span approximately five years.

The Mystery of Phobos and Deimos

This mission builds upon the engineering foundations of the Hayabusa2 mission, which successfully returned samples from a distant asteroid. The primary scientific objective of MMX is to resolve a long-standing debate in planetary science regarding the nature of Phobos and Deimos. Researchers are currently divided on whether these moons are captured asteroids originating from the outer Solar System or the remnants of a massive impact that occurred during the early formation of Mars.

Implications for Planetary Science

Returning physical samples from the Mars region for the first time allows for a level of analysis impossible with remote sensing. By examining the chemical composition of Phobos, scientists hope to gain insights into the prebiotic chemistry and habitable conditions that existed in the early Solar System.
